Description
Marble lion's head from Sant Pere de Rodes (Port de la Selva, Alt Empordà), which appeared in a wall of the Residencia de la Obra Sindical Educación y Descanso “Mariano Álvarez de Castro” in Llançà, in about March or April 1963. The work is attributed to the Master of Cabestany, a name given to a sculptor, or a circle of sculptors (from the 12th century) whose work has been identified in Catalonia, Navarre, France and Italy. The porch of Sant Pere de Rodes, of which only a few fragments are preserved, is one of his most representative works. Two capitals in the monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, centre of the Catalonian Museum of Archaeology in Girona, have been attributed to him.
