Description
Fragment of mosaic featuring a panel with mythological scene. The decoration consists of a field of secant circles with four-petalled flowers framed inside a central square of 1.33 m by 1.25 m with figurative decoration. The emblem has two figures, one male and one female, supported by a cylindrical column or pilaster. The character on the left, male, appears naked, standing with his left leg crossed over the right in a relaxed attitude. He is covered by a chlamys fastened at this right shoulder with a brooch. The left arm rests on the above-mentioned column, with a long stick that supports it; his right arm, in contrast, appears stretched and holds a roughly spherical object. His head is turned to the right, facing the female figure. The female character, on the right of the composition, appears with her hair gathered and facing the male figure, with the right elbow against the pedestal and hand under her chin. She is wearing a mantle that falls behind her right arm and wraps her leg on the same side, while the torso appears naked. In the background, on either side of the picture, there are signs that have been subject to different interpretations: windows, anagrams where the name of the craftsman would be... The scene has undergone various iconographic identifications, always related to the world of mythology, and they vary between a scene of Theseus and Ariadne or Paris and Helena. In the former case, the moment represented would be the time that Ariadne gave the Cretan hero the ball of wool that he would use to avoid becoming lost in the labyrinth of the Minotaur.
