Description
Weight. Circular bronze weight. At the front, it displays incised decoration consisting of a Greek cross of equal arms surrounded by palm and olive flower. Under a "range" with an abbreviation point and the letters Г Β "beta" numeral (abbreviation of the Greek weight meaning two ounces). There are still visible traces of silver that filled the letters and crosses, surrounded by a crown or laurel made with a burin. It is a so-called Byzantine exagium weight, used for checking the weight of precious metals, especially gold. It corresponds to the series of weights within the official system of values established from the currency devaluation and Constantine's creation of the aureus.
